In the bustling world of healthcare, sometimes it's easy to lose sight of the miraculous moments and life-saving encounters that take place every day. Today, we want to share a moving story about one of our Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) patients, Cecilia Garza-Rodrigo, and how collaboration between her True Care Home Health Aide (HHA) and Pod Health took a routine checkup from a standard vitals collection to a swift intervention by our incredible team that saved her life.
Cecilia's Unusual Blood Pressure
It all started when Cecilia’s HHA took three consecutive blood pressure measurements for her early one morning: 69/49, 64/42, and a final result of 65/42. These numbers were suspiciously low compared to her usual baseline of 119/61. Something was definitely amiss.
RN Kelly Springs into Action
Thankfully, our vigilant Pod Health Registered Nurse, Kelly, was quick to respond. She saw Cecilia’s low readings come in through the RPM system and within minutes, she reached out to Cecilia’s HHA. Kelly explained the situation to the HHA, who then relayed back to Kelly that she seemed to be sleeping. Kelly, with an air of urgency, responded, "She is not sleeping; call 911!"
A Race Against Time
The HHA made the call to 911, and Cecilia was swiftly taken to the hospital. It was there that the medical team discovered the cause of her unusual lethargy: a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). UTIs can turn deadly if left untreated, and Cecilia's rapidly declining blood pressure was a clear sign that she needed immediate medical attention. Now, you might be wondering why a UTI would lead to such a dramatic change in blood pressure. The reason is that as people age, UTIs can manifest differently. While most people experience symptoms like pain during urination, blood in the urine, or fever, Cecilia had none of these. Her primary symptom was simply feeling lethargic and sleepy, a result of the low blood pressure caused by the UTI.
RPM to the Rescue
What made all the difference in this critical situation was Cecilia's enrollment in Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM). Her HHA, aware of her RPM status, took her blood pressure. This triggered a rapid response from our Pod Health RN team. The strong collaboration between Pod Health and the HHA on duty was likely the difference between life and death for Cecilia that morning.
